The Rules

  1. The Check-in Point for the Race is the Pioneer Park Community Center located at 6740 Fair Play Road, Somerset, CA 95684. Arrive for Check-in between 11:00am and 12 noon on your Race day. You will receive participation materials and a Clue that will lead you to your first Stop.

  2. A color is assigned to each Leg of the race. Each Stop in your Leg is identified by a colored Route Marker so that you know you are on the right track.

  3. Upon arriving at a winery Stop, you will receive a Challenge. This might be an intellectual Challenge such as a riddle, puzzle, or a blind tasting. Or, it might be a physical Challenge such as barrel rolling or a timed grape "punch-down." Unless otherwise specified, the entire team may collaborate in completing the Challenge or the team may elect a representative to do so.

  4. Depending on the difficulty of the Challenge, its completion will earn your team between 2-5 points.

  5. Be sure to sample the wares along the way! You will rarely taste wines of this caliber.

  6. Detours are points in the Race at which you may choose between two Challenges. Perhaps you might choose between a physical Challenge or an intellectual one, depending on your personal strengths. You might also choose between two tasks of varying difficulty; the more difficult Challenge would earn you more Points.

  7. Roadblocks are Challenges that must be completed by one team member. Teams may choose a member to complete these.

  8. A Fast Forward is an opportunity to bypass a Challenge or Clue. For example, if a Challenge is worth 3 Points, you may cash in 3 Points you have already collected in order to bypass it. A purchase of wine or merchandise may be used as a Fast Forward. In addition, purchases may earn you bonus Points that will give you additional chances at prizes. Wine purchases are optional. No purchases are required to pass any Challenge or complete the Race.

  9. Upon completing the final Stop of your Leg, return to the Checkpoint (Pioneer Park) between 4:30-5:30 pm. Here your Points will be tallied and turned in for participation prizes and chances at drawings.

Food & Accommodations

Plan on picnicking at any of the winery stops as most of the wineries have picnic tables and other rest accommodations or, if you prefer a sit-down meal, click here for a list of local eateries.

You will also be treated to light refreshments during check-out at the end of the day if you choose to stay for the drawings - coffee or a snack for the road, anyone?

Planning an extended stay? Fair Play and surrounding communities offer some excellent accommodations.

Tips on Preparing for the Race
  • Allow yourselves plenty of time. Each Leg is designed to be completed at a leisurely pace, but you will get the most out of the experience if you arrive early and plan to stay the day.
  • Do your homework. Want to gain a competitive edge? Get to know the wineries of Fair Play in advance. Browse this website and those of the individual participating wineries. Who is the winemaker? What is the winery known for? Who are the owners? What did they do before getting into the wine business? What does the wine label look like? And so forth.
  • Dress comfortably. You will find yourself engaged in activities you never dreamed of doing so comfortable, supportive footwear and clothing suitable for physical activity are recommended.
  • Hydrate and fortify yourself. Balancing wine tasting with the regular consumption of water and healthy snacks will help you keep a clear head and good energy level.
The April 19th Race has been postponed. Please check back for new dates which will be announced soon!
