Barbera
is the workhorse grape of Italy's Piedmont region, and it's widely
planted in California too, where it makes up about 10% of California's
red wine production. Barbera is perhaps best known for holding its
acidity when fully ripe, so it's often planted in very warm areas
like California's San Joaquin Valley. When Barbera is grown in cooler
locations and on lighter soils, like the climate and soil of the
Fair Play AVA, it produces lovely wine with deep purple color and
mouth-filling fruit and acidity.
